BMO
Having spent decades immersed in music culture, Oli Warwick channels his expansive music collection into diverse DJ sets as BMO. Drawing on a life-long record collection and bottomless digital archive, his sets reflect a constant curiosity joining the dots between rhythms, tones, textures and moods. From era-spanning shades of deep house to a multitude of techno variations, modern and vintage dubwise abstractions to vast swathes of ambient, angular post-punk to O.G. funk, his deep knowledge and broad tastes apply to all manner of situations—sit-down seances and peak-time propulsion alike. BMO can frequently be found holding it down for festival residencies, underground club nights and cosy pub sessions. There's no one specific BMO sound, but this recording opening Room 1 at Freerotation 2018 gives an impression of his sonic philosophy.
The Land Speed Record Department
Alongside co-researcher Nevada Nate, Beta Motive (BMO) engages in thorough research of musical phenomena from the year 1983. Celebrating the naive innovation of this pivotal turning point in music technology and culture, The Land Speed Record Department uses the limitation of a specific year of focus to seek out the most exciting sounds and unlikely connections from seemingly disparate styles. Synth-pop B-sides, extended 12" dub mixes, disco mutations, private press oddities, the full suite of waves, folk, thrash, punk and funk all fall into the Department's remit. Research findings are presented via a monthly show on Bristol station Noods Radio, through DJ sets and a live show comprised of new productions made up of purely 1983 source material.
